CLEO`s flagship program is the Prelaw Summer Institute, a rigorous residential program designed to familiarize and better prepare students for success in law school. The Institute has been held every summer since 1968 in various law schools (and now online). Additional workshops and seminars are offered for high school, college and graduate students interested in pursuing a career in law. Click on one of the following course logos to learn more: With few exceptions, all attorneys who actively practice law in California must complete a continuing legal education called Minimum Continuing Legal Education (MCLE). The State Bar Association establishes and monitors compliance with MCLE requirements for California licensees. Currently, lawyers are required to complete 25 hours of CME every three years. These hours must include training in legal ethics, jurisdictional issues and bias elimination. In particular, this new implied bias requirement applies to lawyers in the MCLE 3 compliance group, who must report their compliance for the period ending January 31, 2023. People who have obtained legal training elsewhere can only be admitted to our region if they obtain the certificate of legal studies. However, any professionally qualified person in a common law jurisdiction may be admitted to one of the law schools and receive a certificate of legal training at the end of a six-month course. Subsequently, California State Bar Rule 2.72 relating to MCLE requirements for lawyers was amended effective September 24, 2020 to include this new implied bias training requirement. While all lawyers will continue to be required to complete 25 hours of MVLE every three years as of January 1, 2022, the total number of hours must no longer be less than seven hours as follows: In January 2019, the Board updated the Office of the Prosecutor`s 2017-2022 Strategic Plan to include a goal focused on modifying the current ELCC elimination plan and increasing the number of hours.
